Sew stem and appliqué across the width of the cover felt as described in Steps 2 and 3 of the Glasses Case on pages 35–36; the appliqués should appear on the front cover only.

3. Sew Patches Inside Cover

Open the journal cover and lay the patches on the inside front and back covers about ¼" from the edges. Temporarily secure the patches in place with glue stick. Using single-ply floss, insert the needle from the patch side, leaving a 3" tail, and straight stitch around the perimeter of the patch. When you have sewn around the entire patch, leave a 3" tail on the wrong side and tie both tails in a square knot. Trim the ends once the knot is secure. Repeat on the other inside cover.

4. Prepare Journal Pages

Stack the sheets of paper and fold them in half (to 8½" x 5½"). Crease the fold with a bone folder and tear it one sheet at a time.

Large journal only

Restack the torn paper and fold it in half once more to make pages that are 4¼" x 5½". Crease the fold with a bone folder to create a pamphlet.

Small journal only

Restack the torn paper and fold it in half to 8½" x 2¾". Crease the fold with a bone folder and tear the sheets again. Restack the paper and fold it in half one last time to create a pamphlet with pages that are 4¼" x 2¾". Crease the fold with a bone folder.

Both journals

Open the pamphlet to the center fold and mark 3 equidistant points with pencil on the inside of the fold; the top and bottom points should be about ¼" from the edge.

Using an awl or sturdy needle, stab through 4 sheets of paper at a time (see drawing). Use your pencil marks as a guide, placing the sheet with the marks on top of the unpunched sheets and repeatedly piercing through the same holes. Take care to pierce directly through the fold.

5. Attach Pages to Cover

Open the cover and center the pages inside it. Open the journal pages to the center fold.

Thread a needle with a strand of 3-ply floss that is about 2½ times the height of the pamphlet. Following the drawing at left, insert the needle from the inside center hole through to the outside cover, leaving a 3" tail. Check that the pamphlet is positioned correctly, then bring the needle back to the inside through the top hole, down through the bottom hole to the outside, and back to the inside of the journal through the center hole. Tie the 2 tails in a square knot, catching the long thread that travels between the top and bottom holes in the knot.
